I woke up this morning wondering “Why the heck did they name this town Johnson City?” Odd thought for first thing in the morning! Maybe I had a sense that answers would be coming.
On my drive to Knoxville I visited Johnson’s Early Home, Johnson’s Homestead, Johnson’s National Cemetery, Johnson’s National Historic Site … have you figured it out yet?
Andrew Johnson was a tailor from the town of Greenville, the seventeenth President of the U.S., and the first to be impeached once he took office after Lincoln’s assassination. He was not one of our more accomplished Presidents but in these parts he’s revered. Pictured to the right is his final resting place high atop a hill overlooking Greenville.
Once I got through Johnson Country I was ready for my rides. For today I had planned two rides along two rivers. In Knoxville I’d ride in the streets along the Tennessee River. In Nashville I’d ride high along the ridge of the Cumberland River levee. Both were fun rides but they differed in one significant way: one was dry, one was wet … real wet.
Rain was in the forecast but so far my day had been beautiful. Within minutes of mounting my bike in Knoxville it started to rain. Was I going to rethink the ride? No way! This was a headliner of today’s agenda. I plowed through.
OK, I’ll show you how wet I got. Water covered lenses!
Since I’m enjoying the iPhone program MapMyRide so much and I used it on both my rides, I’ll put the routes below for you to see. But let’s take it a step further. I’d like you to take the rides with me.
