Avalon Area Hikes with Cliff

Casino from Hilltop
This vantage point above Avalon gives perspective on the island. It juts out of the water with force and is quite unforgivingly. It is an island with strong character, not some sandy mound that barely surfaces.

The island tempted me to hike its length in stages. First I enjoyed walking around Avalon between sessions of the JazzTrax Festival. Later I ventured out to hike around the ridge of the valley around Avalon and from the “Airport in the Sky” to Avalon. Having 2/5 of the island under my belt I decided I should tackle the recently completed enchilada, the TCT.

My scheme was to tempt my uncle by leading him down the same path.

On Catalina this weekend are an abnormally large number of Good family members. My uncle Art and his son are always here during his festival and I know this because I’m here, which brings the count to three. This weekend uncle Cliff is also here; he’s Art’s older brother. So four. We’re primarily here as Art’s guests to enjoy the four-day JazzTrax smooth jazz festival.

Cliff and I recreated much of my original hikes. The first day saw us taking in part of the canyon rim, hiking up along Avalon Canyon Road and back down Stagecoach Road. Having passed that test I felt encouraged to take him to hike my Catalina favorite from “Airport in the Sky” back to Avalon via Hermit’s Gulch. He passed with flying colors; I fed him a cookie.

Will he grow inspired to hike the whole island?

Time will tell!
