More Old National Trail

Mile Marker
Mile markers were a requirement by the federal government but no specifications were provided. Each State created their own design; this three-sided version from Ohio is my favorite.

Thomas Jefferson commissioned this road which means what remains of it has been around almost as long as the United States. Call me nuts but this amazes me. By looking hard I can still see pieces of of that road and Ive made several outings to drive as much of it as I can.

This time I was going to approach it from the original western terminus in Vandalia, IL and try to follow it east. I say try because much of the old road doesnt exist and you have to jump on Highway 40 which replaced it. Also, the segments which exists are often difficult to drive, are clogged with lights, run through the centers of towns and takes a long time. I know my limits and after a while Ill be less rigorous but I always try to find roadside gems.

Below are a few of those gems to give you a flavor of whats to be seen.

All States of the National Road have their own museums.
