Around and Around Glasgow

Glasgow
Seems everywhere I went there were lions, unicorns, dragons, and various other mythical creatures. In a land as ancient as the U.K. more lore has survived into modern culture and resulted in exotic symbols.

Amazingly after climbing Ben Nevis I wasn’t sore but my legs certainly were tired. So walk around Glasgow for the day? I thought not! Instead I chose an option for site seeing that I’ve come to trust and enjoy: the hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city.

Not only did it choose the City Tour bus, I chose to ride it twice. First I rode it with a wonderfully engaging human tour guide. He had an interest and energy level that I admired (given how often he must have given the same tour!) and he was open to questions and was knowledgable with answers. The second time around the circuit was with a prerecorded tour which wasn’t quite so interactive. However, they both covered similar ground in different ways which helped reinforce my learning.

Hop-on, hop-off is the promise but I only did it a few times. The Glasgow Green which I really enjoy was closed in preparation for a big running competition. The Transport Museum, my favorite in Glasgow, was closed while being relocated to a brand new facility on the river. The usual five o’clock closings-of-all-things-in-the-UK meant I had to be selective. The town square was a buzz, it’s pedestrian shopping streets were full of people and the parks were brimming with sun worshipers.

I finished off my day back at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Going in I knew I was kidding myself. The place was huge and I’d allotted 45 minutes. However, I had decidedly put this off till the end of the day in the interest of seeing more of Glasgow. My sprint at least gave me material to muse as I made my way on foot back to my hostel and dinner at the cafe. Seems there’s almost always reason to return to big, historic cities and today again proved the point.
