West with a Focus on New Mexico

New Mexico’s Flag
On it we see a red sun with rays stretching out from it. There are four groups of rays with four rays in each group. This is an ancient sun symbol of a Native American people called the Zia. The Zia believed that the giver of all good gave them gifts in groups of four.

These gifts are:

The four directions – north, east, south and west.
The four seasons – spring, summer, fall and winter.
The day – sunrise, noon, evening and night.
Life itself – childhood, youth, middle years and old age.

All of these are bound by a circle of life and love, without a beginning or end.

It’s the dead of winter, the holidays are over, and the girls are back at school. Sounds like time for another trip! North? No, brrr! East? No, there’s an ocean in the way of my driving. So why not south and west down to warmer country. Having waiting for the arctic cold to blow past I’m now ready to hit the road.

This trip was inspired by the realization that I know very little about the New Mexico. I’ve passed through it many times. Tucumcari, Santa Rosa and Albuquerque are some of my favorite towns along Route 66. I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent in Santa Fe and Las Cruces but those were brief detours. The State of New Mexico deserves my dedicated attention because of its art culture, it’s indiginous history, it’s historic ruins, its natural wonders.

What’s different on this trip?

First, I’m going to take it slower. This should allow me to blog and post pictures while I’m on the road rather than having to plod through once I’m home. I hope to come out of this with a better feeling than I typically do. Usually I’m burning my candle at both ends.

Second, I’ll have a bicycle with me. For both exercise and middle-distance, intimate transportation I like the idea of being able to hop on two wheels. Walking is great but it can take time. Driving is fantastic but I often can’t get close to things when I’m behind the wheel. My bike could provide the agile transport that I’m looking for.

So, that’s it. I’m prepared for my trip … ready, set, go!
